Ian studied at Sunderland School of Pharmacy, qualifying in 1980. Initially, he joined the family firm – James Cubbin & Sons – and later read his doctorate jointly at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and the University of Sunderland.
When he returned to the North West, he became a teacher practitioner at John Moores University. Currently Ian is MD of a company operating five pharmacies in the Wirral.
For six years Ian was the North West community pharmacy trainer for NHS Direct; he is a past Chairman of South Cheshire LPC and was a PEC member for four years (Ellesmere Port and Neston, prior to amalgamation).
Ian currently sits on the Pharmacy Development Group for Cheshire, is the PSNC representative for the Mersey region and is on the Regional Committee for the RPSGB. He has continued to hold teaching posts over the course of his career and is currently responsible for the supplementary prescribing course for pharmacists in Liverpool.
