Understanding the changes to the GPhC CPD rules

Do you understand the changes to the GPhC CPD rules and framework for CPD that came into force on 2 July 2011?

The GPhC updated their rules regarding Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and the framework for CPD on 2 July 2011.  The updates mean there are a number of changes to your CPD requirements and the CPD call and review process.

Below are the key changes that you will need to consider when preparing your CPD records:

  • 3 of your 9 CPD records per year must start from reflection
  • You must achieve at least 50% of the assessable good CPD recording practice criteria (Appendix 3)  overall within your CPD records
  • If you do not meet the GPhC CPD requirements, the GPhC may ask you to undertake and record additional CPD activities by a specified date for further review.

The rules now detail the consequences of non-compliance, explaining what actions will be taken if a pharmacist or pharmacy technician fails to comply with the GPhC CPD requirements.  Registrants who fail to submit their CPD records to the GPhC for review (after the initial request and subsequent reminders), will receive a letter from the GPhC giving the registrant 28 days notification of the GPhC’s intention to remove them from the register. If you fail to respond to a request from the GPhC to submit your CPD records for review, they are able to remove you from the register.

The GPhC will not expect registrants to meet these requirements until the new rules and framework have been in force for 1 year.

For full details of your CPD requirements refer to the GPhC website or www.uptodate.org .
