Promoting pharmacy to the public

A primary objective of the Ask Your Pharmacist campaign is to help to shift public perceptions of community pharmacy as a supplier of medicines to that of a source of expert advice alongside the supply of medicines and as a source of a wide range of healthcare services, both NHS and private.

    • Details

In 2009, our long running Ask Your Pharmacist consumer campaign is focused on:

      • Promoting community pharmacy as a public health service provider – specifically around sexual health, vascular screening and health inequalities
      • Promoting the community dispensing service as a safe, professional, responsive service
      • Promoting community pharmacy as a “quality assured” service provider

This year’s campaign has focused on specific topics – MUR, POM to P switches, allergy screening, chlamydia testing and treatment and Health Checks.  We have also collaborated with pharmaceutical manufacturers such as Actavis (Clamelle) in their own consumer campaigns.

We are held our first ever AYP Week during 9-15th November.  Find out more

      • We promoted MUR by giving the public 'permission' to talk to their pharmacists about medicines and the management of their long term conditions.
      • We encouraged the public to ask the pharmacy team about the state of their health - and find out how they can improve it.
      • We promoted the role of pharmacists in sexual health specifically chlamydia testing and treatment.
      • We continued to promote the role of pharmacy in supporting the public in quitting smoking.
  • Ask Your Pharmacist campaign 2007

    • Details

In 2007 we focused on promoting both the pharmacist and the range of skills available from the pharmacy team - e.g. the different roles played by medicine counter assistants and pharmacists.

      • We acknowledged stop smoking pharmacy exemplars through the award of "National Clear Awards" from Roy Castle Lung Foundation.
      • The NPA spearheaded the Roy Castle Lung Foundation campaign by supporting them in the Lung cancer awareness month.
      • We worked with Ask About Medicines who focused on "Asking about medicines as you grow up".
      • We had a social marketing campaign using beer mats in pubs and student unions MySpace on line.
      • We used principally regional media including the local press, regional TV (in Ulster) and some national media: GMTV and a series of Daily Express editorial columns.

Human interest - can you help?

The media are always looking for human interest stories.  Perhaps you and your team have helped a patient give up smoking, lose weight, to understand why its so important to take their medicines or even a life saving intervention.

Whatever the story, we would be delighted to hear from you, and maybe even your patient would like to be interviewed by us?

Contact Mark Beckett if you think you may have something of interest.
