The National Pharmacy Association (NPA) is encouraging people to visit their local pharmacy to help with their New Year’s resolution of giving up smoking. Many community pharmacies now offer stop smoking NHS services, so advice and support is free.

The NPA has put forward recommendations for community pharmacy to be further integrated into the Scottish Government’s plans for the NHS. Recommendations include: support for those with long term conditions, pharmacy provision of Keep Well Health Checks, access to care records, integration of medicines management, communication about patient discharge from hospital and the further development of the community pharmacy unscheduled care service.

Leyla Hannbeck has been appointed Head of Information at the National Pharmacy Association (NPA). Leyla joins the NPA on Monday 4 January 2010 from Eilbeck J F Chemist, Co. Durham where she worked as pharmacy manager for the group.

On 12 November, the National Pharmacy Association and the Ulster Chemists’ Association organised an Ask Your Pharmacist event at the CastleCourt Shopping Centre, Belfast. Held in Ask Your Pharmacist Week the event saw almost 200 health checks carried out, with pharmacists also on hand to answer any health related questions from the public.

The Ask Your Pharmacist Launch at the Houses of Parliament (4 November) sought to raise awareness of services being provided in community pharmacy to MPs and key stakeholders. The event was hosted by Shadow Health Minister Mark Simmonds MP, with speeches from Health Minister Mike O’Brien MP and John Turk, National Pharmacy Association Chief Executive.
