How incapacitated do I have to be?
You must be totally unable to perform the essential duties of your insured occupation.

What happens if I can only work part-time during incapacity?
The Society will consider each case individually and may, at the discretion of the Society's Committee of Management, make claim payments, on a proportional basis.

Are there any exclusions?
Yes, we will not pay you for any incapacity from:
  1. intentional self-injury;
  2. surgical procedures carried out solely for cosmetic purposes;
  3. the effects of or while under the influence of alcohol or drugs (other than drugs taken as directed or administered by a registered medical or dental practitioner);
  4. any disorderly conduct, or criminal act or omission;
  5. wilful participation in riot or civil commotion;
  6. by accidents arising from or during participation in any Hazardous Activity other than those declared to and accepted on risk by the Society;
  7. war, invasion of or act of a foreign enemy or any enemy foreign to the country in which the incapacity was caused or civil war (in each case whether war is declared or not);
  8. any mental, nervous psychotic or psychoneurotic deficiencies or disorder without demonstrable organic disease, including all neurosis, reactive depression or anxiety;
  9. reactive disorders without demonstrable organic disease consequent upon or arising from the illness, death, injury or other misfortune of whatsoever nature of another person;
  10. the direct or indirect effects of radiation or radioactive contamination
  11. pregnancy or abortion or the complications of childbirth, but such Income Members suffering during pregnancy from any illness or infirmity arising otherwise than from pregnancy or abortion or the complications of childbirth shall be entitled to Income Benefit;
  12. sterilisation procedures except where necessitated on medical grounds; or
  13. cosmetic surgery.

What if I am not in regular remunerative employment prior to making a claim?
In such cases "incapacity" shall mean the necessary permanent confinement of the member to their normal place of residence, or to a hospital or other recognised medical establishment, or to such other premises as may be agreed by the Committee of Management, or the total inability of the Member to perform unaided three or more of the following activities:
  • dressing and undressing
  • washing and bathing
  • eating and drinking
  • preparing and cooking food
  • general household duties such as cleaning and laundering clothes
  • climbing stairs
  • shopping

What about HIV/AIDS?
We do not automatically exclude claims arising from HIV/AIDS.

Cancellation Rights
After your application is accepted you will receive a notice of your right to cancel. You will then have 30 days in which to change your mind, in which case the premium paid by you during this time will be refunded.

Premiums
Premiums must be paid by direct debit. You may elect to pay monthly or annually. The premium increases automatically every year. It may also be necessary for the Society to increase the rates from time to time, on the advice of its Appointed Actuary.

Apportionment (savings element)
On an annual basis, an apportionment of surplus based on the Society's financial results, is allocated to your account. These annual apportionments are determined by the Society's Management Committee, acting upon the advice of the Society's actuary.

  • We or other Companies authorised by us reserve the right to discuss any relevant aspects of your medical treatment or examination with the provider of that treatment or examination.
  • We may give out the information to detect and prevent fraud or improper claims, to process claims that are also covered by another insurer and to enable us to develop services that we think may be in your interests.
  • We and other Companies approved by us (which may include host mailings on their behalf) may advise you by letter, electronic mail or otherwise of services or products which we believe you may be interested in. This may involve an analysis of any information that you have provided. You should let us know if you prefer not to receive such information. You have the right to see the information we hold on you.

Tax
Under existing legislation, the apportionment added to your account each year, and accumulated cash lump sum payable is payable free of tax under current legislation.

The Society's Head Office is situated in England, at 40-42 St Peters Street, St Albans, Hertfordshire, AL1 3NP. In any legal disputes, the law of England and Wales applies.
