NPA NHS Service Development
Community pharmacies provide an expanding range of professional services, from minor ailment schemes to stop smoking support, medicines management and much in between.

The NHS Service Development Department works to identify, cultivate and promote NHS service development opportunities and to support NPA members who wish to take these up.

To this end, we:
  • Gather and disseminate the evidence base and good practice on extended pharmacy services.
  • Produce practical, written resources for members. Among other popular resources released in 2005/06 were a range of guides explaining new forms of NHS commissioning and an Enhanced Services Toolkit.
  • Publish Professional Practice Matters for members, containing news and features about service developments and the NHS context
  • Provide a regular email information service for local pharmacy leaders
  • Answer member queries on service development issues
  • Promote community pharmacy services to policy-makers and NHS service commissioners, including via distribution of the quarterly Pharmacy Flyer.
  • Work with local pharmacy leaders to support pilots of pharmaceutical services that will generate new learning, push the boundaries of practice and are of national significance.
The department's head office team, based at Mallinson House, is complemented by a team of field-based service development managers who ensure that opportunities for members are detected and promoted locally as well as nationally.
