DHSC update on ranitidine supply disruption 6 May 2020

DHSC has issued a Medicine Supply Notification following the ongoing regulatory investigations into contaminant found in ranitidine

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) issued a Medicine Supply Notification MSN/2020/025 last week updating healthcare professionals on all formulations of ranitidine following the ongoing regulatory investigations on the presence of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) contaminant:

  • All pharmacies should have received this in the NHSmail inbox
  • Ranitidine injection 50mg/2ml is anticipated to be out of stock from the end of May 2020 until further notice
  • All strengths of ranitidine film-coated tablets, effervescent tablets and oral solution are out of stock with no availability date
  • Clinical advice on alternatives for adults and children was shared in the Supply Disruption Alert SDA/2019/005 (U2) issued in December 2019; see summary table below
