NPA commissioned EY survey launched to check financial status of independent community pharmacy sector
22 May 2020
The last few months have been exceptionally challenging for all of us on all levels – personal, professional, financial, mental and health perspectives. Throughout these extremely difficult times, everyone in the independent community pharmacy sector has continued to provide outstanding patient care while dealing with very difficult circumstances. We recognise the hard work and courage it has taken from each member of our sector and we thank you.
At the same time, the first annual review of community pharmacy funding in England under the five-year contractual settlement is imminent. The NPA is working on behalf of our members to ensure that this review is as informed as possible. For this to be a robust process, it is vital to quantify both the financial impact of the COVID-19 crisis, and that of the five-year contractual settlement implemented from 2019.
We have commissioned the global consultancy firm EY (formerly known as Ernst & Young) to investigate the financial position of the independent community pharmacy sector and inform the first annual review of funding in England under the five-year contractual settlement, and conduct an economic impact assessment of the funding and policy framework in England. An expert health economic team from EY will assess the robustness of the pharmacy market and consider how far restricted funding and the broader economic environment may impact on efforts to achieve NHS objectives.
The EY survey will also capture some details of community pharmacy’s response to the Covid-19 crisis. This period has highlighted not only the challenges that pharmacy is dealing with, but also the important role that community pharmacy can play in absorbing pressure that would otherwise be put on other parts of the health system.
Request to our members
For the EY survey to be meaningful, we are requesting that each and every one of our members in England – whether you are a single independent community pharmacy owner, or have many branches in your business –completes the survey. This is the best way for EY to have robust data to produce the economic impact assessment, which will feed into the first annual review of community pharmacy funding under the current settlement.
We, therefore, urge you to participate in the survey which can be completed within an Excel spreadsheet available to download from the following site: www.npa.co.uk/ey-survey
We are requesting you to complete and return the completed survey forms to EYsurvey@npa.co.uk by 31st May 2020.
Data protection and privacy
We take the privacy of your data very seriously. Data collection and processing will be in accordance with the NPA’s data protection policy. Responses will be kept confidential and only aggregated data will be published.
