Umesh Patel MBE represents North England members since 1998 and was NPA chairman in 2006.

Umesh Patel MBE represents North England members and was NPA chairman in 2006. Umesh studied pharmacy at Sunderland University, qualifying in 1978. He opened his first pharmacy in London in 1980 and moved to Sunderland in 1990. He was Chairman of the Sunderland branch of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB) between 1995 and 1997 and is a chairman of the local LPC. He was joint Vice Chairman of the Border region branch and local branch of the RPS, an NPA nominee on the PSNC Committee. He was chairman of the PSNC’s Review and Audit Panel for over 15 years and is chair of NSPCC Sunderland Business Board in Sunderland. He now owns one retail pharmacy and has represented the North East region on the NPA Board since 1998.

Mr. Patel was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s 2011 New Year Honours List, recognising his services to healthcare in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. In 2010 he received an Honorary Doctorate of Science from the University of Sunderland and was appointed to The Board of Governors of the University and a member of its Audit committee, Cultural committee and Mental Health Committee. He was on the board of governors of Sunderland High School. Umesh is also the director of the Sunderland Minster Church. On May 2013, Mr. Patel was appointed Deputy Lieutenant to the Lord-Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear. He is also a fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.
