1.NPA Insurance Ltd is an Insurer and underwriter, not a broker

National Pharmacy Association Ltd owns NPA Insurance Ltd which is one of the UK’s smallest insurers yet protects over 60% of the pharmacy market in the UK.

NPA Insurance provides specialist Indemnity, public liability and legal defence insurance for pharmacy owners, provides policies for locum pharmacists and technicians and pharmacy property insurance.

Unlike other pharmacy insurance providers, NPA Insurance is the underwriter which means that we can make quick decisions on what is covered and can offer flexible bespoke solutions. We work closely with the NHS and Department of Health and can provide cover for life saving PILOTS and innovative services which other providers do not.

2.NPA Insurance has a range of unique benefits and services in the policies to support pharmacy

Offering a full one stop shop for all of pharmacy insurance needs from indemnity to property covers. NPA Insurance policies constantly evolve to ensure pharmacists are protected for NHS, private and innovative new services, including weight loss.

The Indemnity and legal defence policy provides market leading breadth of cover and is offered on a losses occurring basis, which is very unusual in the market, ensuring peace of mind if when selling a pharmacy or retiring.

Another thing many won’t know is that the buildings cover and bespoke pharmacover policy has the benefit of a free year’s insurance after 5 claim free years.

3. NPA Insurance cover keeps up with NHS changes - almost instantly

When the new NHS Pharmacy First scheme landed in 2024, NPA Insurance reacted within days. Policy enhancements were added to ensure policyholders could keep offering these services without worrying about gaps in protection. Few insurers move that quickly.

Pharmacy First consultations, contraception services, and hypertension checks are all now included in the indemnity cover. What’s more, non-pharmacist staff giving vaccinations (COVID, flu, travel) are covered too.

Taking part in NHS pilots like the Independent Prescriber Pathfinder or the Early Cancer Detection in Community Pharmacy scheme? If you’ve got NPA Insurance prescribing cover, those activities are included. No extra fees, no extra paperwork, just the reassurance that you can innovate safely.

4. Our industry knowledge and expertise is unrivalled in the UK

The NPA has been protecting pharmacies for over 125 years. The NPA Insurance company has an in-house team of qualified clinical negligence lawyers and specialist underwriters who are available to offer specialist support immediately, whether it is a complex medical negligence claim, fitness to practice investigation or assistance with a complaint.

The NPA Insurance teams work closely with the NPA membership teams including the Pharmacy Advice and Support teams to produce risk mitigation material and knowledge articles on topics from independent prescribing to AI in the dispensary.

5. We’re up to date with Private services and aesthetics

With more pharmacies expanding into private services, NPA Insurance ensure that policies keep pace and cover a huge range of services such as weight loss, cholesterol or allergy testing.

For Pharmacies branching into aesthetics, cryotherapy or ear-microsuction, NPA Insurance has policies for those too, backed by their in-house team of specialist lawyers if you ever need legal defence.
