Why 17 December 2025 was a dark day for pharmacy

17th December 2025

It’s 10 years since the first cuts to community pharmacy. Today, we’re still campaigning hard for the better deal that community pharmacies deserve. Unprecedented campaigning by NPA members helped secure the first significant uplift in pharmacy funding in years this April, but the story cannot end there.

We’re out in front campaigning for pharmacy: We have well over 2,600 national media mentions this year from the Today programme, BBC Breakfast and Good Morning Britain to the BBC News App

We’re advocating for an expanded role for community pharmacy across the UK in medicines optimisation, independent prescribing, point of care testing and tackling health inequalities. We strengthened the case for new funded services by publishing new health economic research and we were the only community pharmacy body participating in the Covid-19 public inquiry.

There’s a bright future  - if we fight for it. In an article for Chemist & Druggist today Our Chief Executive Henry Gregg lays out how that could happen
