For trainee pharmacists, the GPhC Common Registration Assessment is a significant milestone on the journey to becoming a registered pharmacist. The assessment is designed to test whether trainees can apply their pharmaceutical knowledge, clinical judgement and calculation skills safely and effectively in practice.
Successful preparation is not simply about spending more hours revising. It is about studying strategically, identifying knowledge gaps and practising in a way that reflects the structure of the assessment.
The NPA Learning and Development team has put together 8 practical revision tips to help you prepare confidently for the Common Registration Assessment.
What is the GPhC Common Registration Assessment?
The GPhC Common Registration Assessment is the final assessment trainee pharmacists must pass before joining the GPhC register and practising as a pharmacist.
Delivered by the GPhC at designated venues across the UK, the assessment evaluates the knowledge, judgement and decision-making skills required for safe and effective pharmacy practice.
While the assessment itself is administered by the GPhC, preparation resources can help trainees become familiar with the assessment framework, question styles and exam techniques.

Here are the Top 8 Tips
1. Create a realistic revision plan
Identify the topics you find most challenging and prioritise them within your revision schedule. Regularly revisiting difficult areas is often more effective than repeatedly reviewing subjects you already know well.
A structured plan can also help ensure you cover all areas of the assessment framework before the exam.
2. Use mock assessments to guide your learning
Mock assessments are one of the most effective ways to test your knowledge and identify areas for improvement. When reviewing your results, ask yourself why mistakes occurred. Were they caused by a lack of knowledge, poor time management, misreading the question or calculation errors? Understanding the reason behind an error can help focus your future revision.
3. Practise under timed conditions
The Common Registration Assessment requires candidates to work both accurately and efficiently. Introducing timed practice sessions into your revision can help you develop confidence working under pressure and improve your ability to manage assessment timings.
4. Familiarise yourself with the assessment framework
Understanding the GPhC assessment framework can help direct your revision towards the knowledge and competencies most likely to be tested. Reviewing the framework regularly can also help identify any gaps in your preparation.
5. Know everyday pharmacy formulae
Be confident using common practice-based formulae, such as BMI calculations, as some formulae may not be provided during the assessment. Regular calculation practice can improve both speed and accuracy.
6. Practise using resources efficiently
Many assessment questions require candidates to locate and interpret information quickly. Develop your ability to use search functions and reference resources efficiently, while always checking that the information you find is relevant to the specific clinical scenario.
7. Learn from previous feedback
Review published learning points and common mistakes highlighted from previous sittings. Understanding where candidates frequently lose marks can help you avoid making the same errors.
8. Look after yourself
Effective revision depends on maintaining good concentration and decision-making. Prioritise sleep, healthy meals, hydration, regular breaks and stress-management techniques throughout your revision period.
Put your revision into practice
Knowledge alone is not enough. Structured practice helps you apply what you have learned, become familiar with assessment-style questions and identify where to focus your revision efforts.
The NPA FTP Assessment Preparation Course and Trainee Pharmacist Mock Exam are designed to support learners preparing for the Common Registration Assessment, helping you practise your knowledge and refine your assessment technique before exam day.
