What is Hypertension?

Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, stroke and heart failure. Evidence shows that reducing systolic blood pressure by just 10 mmHg can lower the risk of coronary heart disease by around 17%, with even greater reductions seen for stroke and heart failure.

As a community pharmacy professional, you are well placed to support the prevention, early detection and management of high blood pressure. From providing lifestyle advice and identifying elevated readings through health checks or case-finding services, to counselling patients on the safe and effective use of antihypertensive medicines, your role is vital.
