Exploitation & Coercion
What is Exploitation?
Exploitation happens when someone takes advantage of another person for personal gain. This could be financial, emotional, or even criminal. Coercion is when someone is pressured, manipulated, or forced into doing something they don’t want to do.
How Might This Affect You as a Distance Learning Student?
As a student working in a pharmacy, you may be vulnerable to exploitation, for example:
Workplace exploitation – Being asked to work unpaid overtime, perform unsafe tasks, or take on responsibilities beyond your role
Financial exploitation – Pressure from colleagues, friends, or family to lend money or share personal financial details
Emotional coercion – Being guilt-tripped or manipulated into uncomfortable situations at work or in personal life
What Can You Do?
Recognise the signs – If you feel pressured or manipulated, it’s okay to say no.
Speak up – Report any concerns to your employer, tutor, or a safeguarding officer.
Seek help – You don’t have to deal with it alone. There are organisations that can support you.
