Young Carers
What is a Young Carer?
A young carer is someone under 18 who helps care for a family member with a disability, illness, mental health condition, or substance misuse issue. This care can include physical, emotional, or practical support.
While caring for others can be rewarding, it can also place significant pressure on young people, especially when balancing education, work, and personal life.
How Might This Affect You as a Distance Learning Student?
Struggling to balance study, work, and caring responsibilities
Feeling tired, stressed, or overwhelmed
Missing deadlines or falling behind in learning
Limited time for social activities or self-care
Feeling isolated or unsupported
What Can You Do?
Speak up - Let your training provider or employer know about your situation
Plan your time - Try to structure study around your responsibilities
Seek support - You are entitled to help and understanding
Don’t struggle alone - There are organisations that can support young carers
Who Can Help?
If you are a young carer or supporting someone with caring responsibilities, these organisations can provide guidance and support.
