Leading the Way: The NPA Future Pharmacy Network

15th October 2025

Community pharmacy is at a critical crossroads. Across the UK, pharmacies are facing unprecedented financial pressures — rising costs, stretched funding, and the everyday realities of running a vital healthcare service under strain. Yet, despite these challenges, our sector remains a cornerstone of community health and a trusted first point of contact for millions of people.

At the NPA, we recognise that financial sustainability and professional innovation must go hand in hand. That’s why we’ve launched the NPA Future Pharmacy Network — a national initiative to help our members evolve, adapt, and thrive in a changing healthcare landscape.

Together, We Move Forward

The Future Pharmacy Network is built on collaboration — developed by the NPA, shaped by an expert steering group of innovative member pharmacy owners, and designed to support every independent pharmacy, no matter where they are in their journey.

Our goal is simple but ambitious: to empower community pharmacies to build resilient, future-ready businesses by:

• Maximising NHS service opportunities and ensuring members are ready to deliver the next generation of community health support.

• Growing private services, through guidance and tools that enable pharmacies to expand their income streams and meet local demand.

• Embracing independent prescribing, unlocking the potential for pharmacists to deliver enhanced clinical services.

And crucially, access to the network is free for active NPA members, ensuring that support is open, shared and continually evolving as the sector evolves.

An Evolving Network for a Changing Landscape

Every pharmacy in the UK faces unique challenges. Whether it’s England’s funding shortfalls and reduced opening hours, Scotland’s inflationary pressures despite Pharmacy First growth, Wales’ advances in independent prescribing, or Northern Ireland’s ongoing underfunding — the picture may differ, but the need for transformation is shared.

The Future Pharmacy Network recognises this diversity. We’ve created practical, adaptable assets and materials that reflect the nuances of pharmacy operations across all four nations. It’s not about a one-size-fits-all solution — it’s about enabling every NPA member to move forward on their own path, with the right tools and support to succeed.

Unlocking Innovation, Sharing Success

Through this network, we are bringing together stories of innovation and success from within our own membership — pharmacies that have diversified, adopted new technologies, grown private services, and strengthened their workforce. These are not abstract case studies, but real-world examples of how community pharmacies can transform and thrive despite the pressures they face.

By sharing these experiences, the NPA aims to inspire practical change — helping members adopt proven approaches that drive both financial success and patient value.

A Shared Mission for a Sustainable Future

Our mission at the NPA has always been clear: to campaign for, support, and connect community pharmacy. The Future Pharmacy Network brings all three together in one initiative — offering commercial and professional guidance, a platform for shared learning, and a community that’s moving forward together.

Pharmacy has always been about people — the patients we serve and the professionals who dedicate themselves to care. The NPA Future Pharmacy Network is our commitment to ensuring that this essential sector not only survives but evolves and prospers.

Together, we can build a stronger, smarter, and more sustainable future for community pharmacy.
