What is Oriel?

For the foundation training year 2025/2026, all trainee pharmacists must be recruited through the National Recruitment Scheme (NRS) using Oriel. This scheme does not allow employers to select their prospective trainee pharmacist(s), and it is the only route to recruit a trainee pharmacist for the foundation training year 2025/26. Payment for the training year is the same for all sectors of practice and across all regions in England. Each training site employing a trainee pharmacist will have access to funding of £26,500 per trainee pharmacist.

The NPA have a dedicated webpage which summarises the changes made to the foundation training year 2025/2026. In conjunction with Health Education England, the NPA held a webinar discussing the implementation and funding of the foundation training year 2025/2026.

Recruitment Process

For the foundation training year 2025/2026, all trainee pharmacists must be recruited through the National Recruitment Scheme (NRS) using Oriel. This scheme does not allow employers to select their prospective trainee pharmacist(s), and it is the only route to recruit a trainee pharmacist for the foundation training year 2025/26. Each training site employing a trainee pharmacist will have access to funding of £26,500 per trainee pharmacist.

Registration period

Employers who are interested in supporting a trainee pharmacist will need to express and register their interest through the Oriel system. Registration for the foundation training year 2025/2026 cohort opens on 11 January 2024 and will close at 23:59 on 1 March 2024. FAQs about Oriel can be found here.

Tips for Employers

Using the Oriel system, you as the employer, will be advertising your pharmacy as a training site which provides a training programme. This is an opportunity to highlight key elements of the programme that you feel would attract applicants, and it is important you take the time to complete the form to make your programme stand out from others so that a prospective trainee chooses you. Please note using the National Recruitment Scheme (NRS) does not guarantee you a trainee pharmacist and for this reason you should make your programme as appealing as possible.

Requirements for employers

When recruiting a trainee for the foundation training year 2025/2026, employers must confirm that trainee will have access to a:

  • Designated Supervisor (previously known as pre-reg tutor) present at the training site(s)
  • Prescribing learning environment
  • Designated Prescribing Practitioner (DPP)

Employers must also:

  • Identify if a multi-sector rotation is included in the training programme and where this site will be
    • A multi-sector rotation is defined as a 13-week or longer rotation into another sector of practice and particularly may be of benefit for your programme if you have no IP onsite in your pharmacy
  • Ensure the training site(s) use the Assessment Strategy and E-portfolio and engage with the NHS England Workforce Training & Education (NHS WTE) Quality Framework
    • These include assessment activities relating to prescribing

Please note, during the registration stage (January 2024 – March 2024), you do not need to identify who the DPP is and where the prescribing environment is.
