Part of the quality payments scheme, one of the eight quality criteria is ensuring that “Asthma patients dispensed more than 6 short acting bronchodilator inhalers without any corticosteroid inhaler within a 6 month period are referred to an appropriate health care professional for an asthma review”.
This criterion is worth 10 quality points at each review stage (20 points in total). This equates to a potential payment of £1,280 if this criterion is met.
The NPA has produced the following resources for contractors:
- Community pharmacy funding cuts 2016/17: final package (Asthma reviews)— a factsheet designed to ensure that contractors have all the information required to set up a robust procedure for identifying and referring eligible patients to their local GP surgery
- Asthma review: referral log – a table to log eligible patients that have been referred to their local GP surgery; this can be used as supporting evidence for having met the asthma review criteria
- Asthma review: poster – a poster to make patients aware that they can speak to their pharmacist regarding their inhaler technique
- Asthma review: GP referral form – a template form that can be used to refer suitable patients to their GP
