A Healthy Living Pharmacy (HLP) is one which consistently delivers a range of quality services, which are tailored to meet the needs of the local population. HLPs play a key role in reducing health inequalities and improving the health and wellbeing of the local population. To achieve HLP Level 1 status, pharmacies must meet the 27 quality criteria set by Public Health England (PHE) – including having at least one Health Champion and one member of the pharmacy team to undertake leadership training.

As a mandatory requirement of the new CPCF in England, all community pharmacies will need to become an accredited HLP by April 2020.

Participants are presented with a certificate at the end of the session which can be counted towards continuing professional development (CPD).

“The case studies and activity scenarios were very helpful – as was hearing other delegate’s examples.”

Prayna Patel, Green Lanes Pharmacy

Leadership training can be undertaken by any suitable member of staff who has the authority to provide leadership for Level 1 HLP development and is able to motivate and engage the team with the HLP ethos. This leadership training is also for anyone with management or supervisory responsibilities in pharmacies (not only HLPs).

Leadership training is delivered at a face-to-face workshop.

The HLP Leadership interactive training session will cover areas such as:

  • Building a great team – leading, motivating, delegating, developing self and others
  • Communication
  • How to give feedback
  • Identifying different leadership styles
  • Group work – including examples and action plans
  • Changes in pharmacy and the direction of travel
  • What you need to know about Healthy Living Pharmacies
  • The role of Healthy Living Champions
  • Qualities seen in great leaders and how this relates to pharmacy
  • The ability to build strong relationships

Delegates will review case study examples, undertake Group activities and complete an action plan as part of the training session.

Participants are presented with a certificate at the end of the training which can be used as evidence for meeting the PHE HLP Level 1 quality criteria to undertake leadership training.
