The way we recruit pre-registration pharmacists is changing. Act now.
2021 saw the launch of the new initial education and training standards for pharmacists. This means that from 2026 all newly qualified pharmacists will also be independent prescribers.
The foundation year (previously known as the pharmacist pre-reg year), will now need to include the relevant learning outcomes to support this. This includes having access to a designated prescribing practitioner (DPP) who will mentor and supervise the trainee pharmacist in attaining their IP qualification.
The NPA is working with the Workforce, Training and Education department (formerly known as HEE), to ensure that the NPA membership has a full understanding and is able to participate in the new processes.
Throughout June & July 2023 we held three webinars to further understand the implementation of these standards, which will begin to take affect from next year.
NPA members were able to ask questions of Nick Kaye, Helga Mangion and colleagues from the NHSE WT & E (former HEE) and share their views.
Nick Haddington and Atif Shamim from the NHS shared details around the new foundation education reforms, the new mandatory Oriel programme and an update on independent prescribing within community pharmacy.

If you have any questions, please contact Helga Mangion at Independentsvoice@npa.co.uk
Helga will also be available at the pharmacy show at stand C35, to either discuss how this would impact you and your pharmacy and answer any questions.
