Hot off the press – new course launches from the NPA L&D team

11 Sep 2020

2020 is turning out to be a very busy, but exciting year for the NPA’s Learning & Development team.

Not only have we launched three completely new training courses to support the professional development of pharmacy staff, we have also enhanced existing programmes to meet member needs and the challenges of COVID-19.

Below we will introduce you to the new courses and highlight some of the improvements to our existing programmes – for each course we include a link through to the relevant page on the NPA website for you to find out more information.

– NEW COURSES –

BTEC Diploma in the principles and practice for pharmacy technicians

The NPA is very pleased to launch its new Level 3 course, which is accredited by the GPhC. It leads to a nationally specialist and professional qualification in the form of a BTEC Diploma. The diploma includes accuracy checking and leadership skills training – so there is no need for the student to undertake separate courses to acquire these skills.

Full details including videos and slides providing extensive background information and our introductory 5% discount on the standard course fee can be accessed here.

Medicines counter and dispensing assistant course

Launched a few weeks ago, this course is already proving popular with our members. It allows your staff to complete training for both on the medicines counter and in the dispensary under the supervision of a pharmacist giving them the flexibility to work on either, as necessary.

More information on this course can be viewed via this link.

Accuracy checking for dispensers

Another brand new course – this is designed to enable level 2 certified dispensing assistants to undertake accuracy checks on dispensed prescription items competently, in accordance with the pharmacy’s own standard operating procedures (SOPs).

A two-year certificate will be issued to the accuracy checker upon successfully passing the portfolio and the final assessment – to use under the supervision of the supervising pharmacist who signs them off.

Visit our course information page to find out more.

eLearning mock exam for provisionally registered pharmacists and pre-registration students

The online mock exam is included as part of the NPA’s Pre-registration Training programme, but is now open for all – this includes those on the provisional register and pre-registration students.

The mock exam can be bought directly from the NPA for £60 incl. VAT.

In addition, we’re offering a free handbook with enrolment. The handbook gives an overview of common over-the-counter conditions encountered in practice, as well as guidance on how to check a dispensed prescription accurately.

Further details on the NPA’s mock exam and the free handbook are available here.

PGDs

As well as holding the majority of our 2019 prices, we have added PGDs to our vaccination and oral bundles but not increased their prices from last year. All NPA PGDs come with two PGD formats as standard included within the price – paper and ePGD. We have introduced a Flu PGD only – conditions apply – and launched the Travel Health Services (THS), an online travel health assessment tool from MPS.

We’re offering a range of PGD packages that include the training – whether you and your team require online refresher training or full practical training. If you are unsure which type of training you need to undertake for this year’s flu season, you can view our training pathways or use the quick online tool designed by CB Training here.

eLearning courses via the Learning Academy

The NPA’s online platform, the Learning Academy provides our eLearning students with an enhanced learning experience. It features interactive styles like turn cards and drag and drop to engage the user and it is easy for the student to contact the course tutor directly via the integrated email.

The L&D team has been busy this year improving our existing online courses, like the accredited Dispensary assistant course (ADAC) as well as making other courses available in an eLearning format on this platform, e.g. Delivering medicines safely and effectively.

Visit the individual course pages from our Learning & Development home page for more details.

Don’t forget

We have not mentioned every course available in the paragraphs above – don’t forget the NPA offers training programmes for every role within your pharmacy from the delivery driver up to the pharmacy owner.
