COVID-19: MHRA takes action to halt sales of finger-prick coronavirus antibody testing kits

The MHRA is asking all providers of laboratory-based COVID-19 antibody testing services that use capillary blood collected by a finger-prick instead of venous blood samples, to temporarily stop providing this service until home collection of this sampling has been properly assessed, and validated, for use with these laboratory tests. This does not affect rapid, point of care tests or laboratory tests performed using venous blood samples.

NHS England & NHS Improvement (NHSE&I) has commissioned the Community Pharmacy Home Delivery Service during the COVID-19 outbreak. It is designed to support ‘shielded’ patients in England to access their prescribed medicines and appliances while they are self-isolating at home during the pandemic period. The service went live from 9 April 2020 and will run during the pandemic until 1 July 2020 initially; it may be extended beyond this date following a review.

While the UK is building up testing capacity, the Government is offering testing to different groups in a phased approach and has issued guidance on coronavirus testing for frontline workers (including community pharmacy staff) who are self-isolating.
